Your Teacher

Meet your teacher, Olivia Rowlands...

My name is Olivia, but you can all call me Liv! I have been in love with music since before I can even remember. I started classically training as a pianist at age 8, and continued to utilise the piano to explore other musical genres. As I moved through school, I frequented outside of my musical comfort zone into singing, songwriting and publicly performing more contemporary styles. While I studied at Gordonstoun school, I was also fortunate enough between the ages of 14-17 to travel to Greece, Romania and Ghana to help teach local school choirs. I then obtained my BA Honours degree in commercial music.

After graduating in 2011 and moving to Edinburgh, I realised that my heart was firmly drawn towards roles where I could motivate, empower and help support the growth and development of children from all walks of life. I completed a HNC in early education and childcare, and thus worked as a nursery practitioner for Edinburgh city council, working in nurseries across all corners of the city for 2 years. I then completed my PGDE at Strathclyde University, and have been proudly working as a Primary school Teacher since 2016 at schools in Fife.

I will always retain enormous pride in my teaching background, however, to have an opportunity to combine my professional experience with my life long passion, to help inspire and connect families in my local community, is an opportunity that is too precious to bypass.

As a child, I often felt pressured and restricted by a need to impress and succeed in a musical environment, and have witnessed many people, both children and adults, shy away from musical pursuits as a result of such daunting expectations.

I am on a mission to change this rhetoric. Music is for everyone. Music can enrich us all. Music is simply a way of using sounds and movements to express our true selves, and ignite powerfully joyful feelings and emotions. People of all ages should have the right to create and enjoy music in an inclusive and non-judgemental environment.

To help all of you, both big kids and little thrive and feel confident through the tool of music, would be a true privilege.

All Music Together® teachers, including myself, have successfully completed the live Music Together Teacher Training, which is built on research in early childhood and music development.

I can't wait to meet you and to help you and your children kickstart their musical journey!
